Alexander Doll Company or Madame Alexander Dolls

Madame Alexander Dolls

The Madame Alexander Doll Company was founded by Madame Beatrice Alexander Behrman in 1933.

Madame Alexander was born in Brooklyn, New York on March 9, 1895. She was the daughter of Russian immigrants.

In the 1930’s Madame Alexander introduced the first dolls based on licensed characters from literature and the movies. Alice in Wonderland, Little Women, and Gone with the Wind were pioneering doll concepts which remain popular to this day.

During the 1940’s she initiated the first dolls with “sleep” eyes which open and close and in 1944 introduced the first patriotic dolls to honour the U.S. Armed Forces bravely fighting in World War II.

The Madame Alexander Doll Company is still in operation today.
