Charles Perrault was born in Paris on 12 January 1628, the seventh child of Pierre Perrault, a lawyer at the Parlement of Paris. After an excellent education at the College of Beauvais, rue Jean de Beauvais to Paris, he was admitted to the bar in 1651. He soon abandoned after the bar and became a clerk of his elder brother, Pierre, Receiver General of Finance in Paris.
He laid the foundations for a new literary genre, the fairy tale, with his works derived from pre-existing folk tales. The best known of his tales include Le Petit Chaperon rouge (Little Red Riding Hood), Cendrillon (Cinderella), Le Chat Botté (Puss in Boots), La Belle au bois dormant (The Sleeping Beauty) and La Barbe bleue (Bluebeard).
